We picked up this tune while traveling in Germany and Austria in 1989 but unfortunately dropped the correct spelling. We believed it translated as "Old Bull," which would be "stier." Actually, it means "an old dance from Styria," a part of Austria. It was one of several country dances collected by Anton Ritter von Spaun in 1845. We learned it from an album by Fraunhofer Saitenmusik (Fraunhofer String Music) who took their name from an old restaurant in Munich in 1978. The album, "Gegen den Rhythmüs der Zeit", is from 1985. |
